Last weekend Matt and I cashed in a bunch of loose change at a Coinstar machine and turned it into an Amazon.com gift certificate. We’d like to use it for a couple marriage books. What books do you recommend we get?

Men are from Mars Women are from Venus. Read this book early in our marriage, and we still reference things we learned or laughed about. Like any book, think of it as a buffet of ideas, you can take all the strawberries and chocolates and leave the Brussels Sprouts.

“Love and Respect”. This is a good book for taking a look at different perspectives and communication issues. I know you had not liked the “stereotyping” when we did the study, but it’s a great study. It’s one of those where you take what you like and leave the rest. It’s food for thought and something to springboard from. We also liked “Wild at Heart” and “Captivating”. Same thing, food for thought and a springboard for conversation when read together. Then you can discuss the examples and text in the book and why it does or doesn’t apply to the two of you.

“Love & Respect”, “Wild at Heart”, and “Captivating”. I know you didn’t like the “stereotyping”, but these are really good food for thought books. We used them as a springboard for conversation and discussed why what is discussed in the books do or don’t apply to you. Take what you like and leave the rest. You may be surprised.
